Ecological Research
RMR can carry out investigations and research into several facets of tropical ecology.
These can be studies of
- complete ecosystems,
- areas or water bodies,
- species populations,
- ecological processes.
We have studied the ecology of the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem, (Tanzania-Kenya), Lake Naivasha, (Kenya), South Turkana District, (Kenya), Tsavo-Lower Tana ecosystem, (Kenya), the Bush-bush region, (Somalia), and leaf litter ecosystems.
We have researched autecology and population ecology of blue wildebeest, elephant, hyrax and crocodile.
Process studies carried out include herbivore grazing and population regulation systems, reproductive physiology in synchronous breeding of herbivores, decomposition of organic material in reservoirs, run-off and erosion under the influence of different land use practices, vulture flight under different meteorological conditions, epizootiology of viruses affecting multiple species complexes of herbivores.
